How to care for gold-plated jewellery (so it outshines the trend cycle)

8 November 2026

Plated jewellery is a little like a silk blouse. Treat it kindly and it will look expensive for years. Throw it in the gym bag with a bottle of perfume and, well, it will tell on you.

Every House of Praxis piece is plated metal finished in gold-tone, silver-tone or antique-tone, set with crystal, glass, resin or enamel. It is not solid gold, and we would rather you heard that from us. The good news: a few small habits keep the shine where it belongs.

The one rule: jewellery goes on last, comes off first

Perfume, body lotion, hairspray and sunscreen are the real villains here. They sit on the plating and slowly dull it. So get fully ready, let everything dry, then put your jewellery on. At the end of the day, take it off before you wash your face.

Things your jewellery would rather skip

  • Showers, swimming pools and the sea. Chlorine and salt water are not spa treatments for plating.
  • The gym. Sweat plus friction is a fast track to wear.
  • Sleeping in it. Your pillow is not as gentle as it looks.
  • Cleaning, washing up and anything involving bleach.

How to clean it

After wearing, wipe each piece with a soft, dry cloth: a microfibre glasses cloth is perfect. If it needs more, dampen the cloth with plain water, wipe, and dry straight away.

Skip silver dips, toothpaste hacks, baking soda and jewellery polish. They are abrasive and will rub the plating away. For enamel and resin, the dry cloth is all you need. For crystal, a soft, dry make-up brush gets into the settings without scratching.

How to store it

Each piece comes with its own pouch for a reason. Store pieces separately so crystals do not scratch enamel and chains do not tangle into modern art. Keep them somewhere dry and away from the bathroom steam. A small sachet of silica gel in your jewellery box is a lovely, very cheap upgrade, especially in monsoon humidity.

Spinning bracelets and moving parts

Our spinning medallions, like the Rubellite Spin Bracelet, turn with a gentle fingertip. Fidget responsibly: never force the centre, and close the clasp before you put the bracelet away.

Quick checklist

  • Last on, first off.
  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • No water, no chemicals, no polish.
  • One pouch per piece, stored somewhere dry.

Quick answers

Can I wear gold-plated jewellery every day?

Yes. Most of our pieces are designed for daily wear. Put them on after perfume and lotion, take them off before water and sleep, and wipe them with a soft dry cloth after wearing.

Can I shower with gold-plated earrings?

Better not. Water, soap and shampoo dull plating over time. Take your jewellery off before you shower or swim.

How do I clean gold-plated jewellery at home?

Wipe it with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. If needed, use a cloth slightly damp with plain water and dry it straight away. Avoid polish, toothpaste, baking soda and silver dips.

Is House of Praxis jewellery solid gold?

No. It is plated metal in gold-tone, silver-tone or antique-tone, set with crystal, glass, resin or enamel. Stone names such as emerald-tone describe the colour, not a precious gemstone.
