Demi-fine, fashion or fine jewellery: what the words actually mean

8 November 2026

Jewellery has more labels than a skincare shelf. Fine, demi-fine, fashion, costume, imitation, vermeil. Some of them mean something specific. Some of them mean "please buy this". Here is the honest decoder.

Fine jewellery

Solid precious metal (gold, platinum or sterling silver, usually hallmarked) set with precious or semi-precious gemstones. Made to last generations, priced accordingly, and the reason family lockers exist.

Fashion or costume jewellery

Base metal or alloy, often with a thin finish, made to follow a trend for a season. Fun, very affordable, and not always built to survive a second wedding season.

Demi-fine jewellery

The space in between. The term is used loosely across the industry, so always read the materials line. At House of Praxis it means this: considered design, careful finishing and pieces made to be worn again and again, at a price that does not need a family meeting.

Our pieces are plated metal in gold-tone, silver-tone or antique-tone, set with crystal, glass, resin or enamel. We do not call them gold vermeil or 18K, because they are not. We call them demi-fine because, as far as we are concerned, precious was never about the metal. It is about the woman wearing it.

How to read a product page like a pro

  • Look for the materials line. "Gold-tone" or "gold-plated" means a finish over another metal. "Solid 18K gold" should come with a hallmark.
  • Stone names with "-tone" (emerald-tone, ruby-tone, sapphire-tone) describe colour, not a precious gemstone.
  • Check the care instructions. Honest brands tell you how to keep a piece looking good. Ours are in our care guide.
  • Check the returns policy before you fall in love. Ours is right here.

So which should you buy?

Buy fine jewellery for the heirlooms. Buy fashion jewellery for the one-night experiment. Buy demi-fine for everything in between: the Monday meeting, the Thursday dinner and the cousin's sangeet you were told about on Wednesday.

Quick answers

What is demi-fine jewellery?

Demi-fine sits between fine jewellery (solid precious metal and gemstones) and fast-fashion jewellery. The term is used loosely, so check the materials. At House of Praxis it means carefully designed and finished plated pieces, made to be worn often, at an accessible price.

Is demi-fine jewellery real gold?

It depends on the brand. Some demi-fine pieces are gold vermeil (gold over sterling silver), others are gold-plated or gold-tone. House of Praxis pieces are plated metal in gold-tone, silver-tone or antique-tone, not solid gold.

What does emerald-tone or ruby-tone mean?

It describes the colour of the crystal, glass or enamel. It does not mean a precious emerald or ruby.

The pieces in question.
